Design Engineer Career Guide: CAD, Skills and Salary in Scotland

What design engineers do, the CAD and drawing skills employers want, where the jobs are, what it pays and how to progress.
A design engineer turns a requirement into something that can be made: developing concepts, modelling them in CAD, checking they will work and producing the drawings a workshop or supplier builds from. In Scotland, design engineer jobs are concentrated in offshore and subsea equipment, fabrication, renewables, power, defence and general manufacturing. This guide covers what the job involves, the CAD tools and drawing skills employers ask for, routes in, salary and progression.
Day to day, the work depends on the product and the size of the business, but most design engineer roles include:
In smaller businesses a design engineer may take a product from enquiry to delivery. In larger ones, you are more likely to own one part of a bigger design, working within company and customer standards.
The two roles overlap. A CAD technician or draughtsperson mainly produces models and drawings from someone else’s design. A design engineer is responsible for the engineering decisions behind the design: choosing materials, sizing components, doing the calculations and signing off that it is fit for purpose. Many design engineers start as draughtspeople and move up as they take on that responsibility.
Most design engineer adverts name a specific CAD package, because retraining costs time. The ones you will see most often in Scotland are:
| Software | Where you tend to see it |
|---|---|
| SolidWorks | Widely used in general manufacturing, machinery, fabrication and smaller engineering businesses |
| Autodesk Inventor | Fabrication, structural steelwork, machinery and product design |
| AutoCAD | 2D layouts, general arrangements, electrical schematics and older drawing libraries |
| PTC Creo | Larger manufacturers and some offshore, subsea and defence businesses |
Other packages such as Siemens NX, CATIA or Solid Edge appear in specific sectors, and electrical design engineers use tools such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN. On your CV, state which packages you have used, for how long, and whether you have used the PDM or vault system that goes with them. Moving between 3D packages is usually straightforward for an experienced engineer, but employers still prefer a direct match.
A design is only as good as the drawing that describes it. Employers look for engineers who can produce clear, complete fabrication and manufacturing drawings: correct views and sections, dimensions and tolerances that reflect how the part will be made and inspected, weld symbols on fabrication drawings, surface finish, material and notes.
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) defines the allowable variation in form, orientation and position of features relative to datums. It matters most in precision, machined and assembled products, where plain plus and minus tolerances are not enough to describe function. In the UK, BS 8888 is the national standard for technical product documentation and specification, and it references the international ISO geometrical product specification (GPS) standards. BSI published a 2025 edition updating guidance on datums, general tolerances and model-based definition. Some customers, particularly those with US links, work to ASME Y14.5 instead, so know which system you have used.
Aberdeen and the north east have a large offshore and subsea equipment supply chain, designing items such as lifting equipment, structures, tooling and subsea hardware. This work often involves design to recognised codes and third-party verification, and our Scottish Engineering Salary Guide 2026 shows offshore and subsea equipment design at the top of the design engineer salary range. See our Aberdeen engineering recruitment page.
Fabricators and manufacturers across the central belt, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Fife employ design engineers on machinery, steelwork, process equipment and bespoke products. Knowing how things are cut, rolled, welded and machined makes your designs cheaper to build and earns respect in the workshop. See manufacturing and industrial.
Scotland’s onshore and offshore wind, grid and power sectors employ both mechanical and electrical design engineers. Electrical design for power and renewables is among the best-paid design work in our salary guide. See energy and renewables and our electrical engineer career guide.
Design engineers also work in marine and defence, aerospace and precision, construction and building services and food and drink equipment.
A traditional route is a Modern Apprenticeship in engineering, often in a fabrication, machining or technical role, followed by a move into the drawing office. Engineers who have worked on the tools or in the workshop tend to produce drawings that are easier to build.
An HNC (SCQF level 7) or HND (SCQF level 8) in mechanical, electrical or manufacturing engineering, as set out in the SQA guide to Scottish qualifications, is a common qualification for design engineers, often studied part time while working as a CAD technician.
Many design engineer roles, particularly in offshore, defence and power, ask for a degree in mechanical, electrical or a related engineering discipline. A degree also makes the route to chartership more direct.
The Engineering Council registers engineers as EngTech, IEng or CEng, usually through a professional institution such as the IMechE or IET. Registration is assessed on competence as well as qualifications, and chartered status is often expected for lead and principal design roles in consultancy and energy.
Our CV tips and engineering interview questions guide have more detail. Many design interviews include a drawing review or a short practical task, so be ready to talk through a drawing line by line.
According to our Scottish Engineering Salary Guide 2026, built from live Scottish adverts for permanent roles, design engineers earn £35,000 to £70,000 basic. The top of the range goes to engineers designing offshore and subsea equipment and to electrical design engineers in power and renewables. For comparison, the same guide lists mechanical engineers at £40,000 to £70,000 and electrical engineers at £40,000 to £80,000.
Specific CAD skills, sector experience, working to design codes and chartered status all move you up the range. Read our guide on how to negotiate your engineering salary before you discuss figures.
A common progression is CAD technician or draughtsperson, design engineer, senior design engineer, then lead or principal design engineer. From there, engineers usually go one of three ways:
Our guide to engineering career progression goes into these choices in more detail.
Engineering Recruit Scotland is a specialist permanent engineering recruitment agency based at Strathclyde Business Park, Bellshill. The business was set up in 2020 and our directors have 25 years recruiting engineers in Scotland. We recruit design engineers across energy and renewables, manufacturing, marine and defence, aerospace and construction, throughout Scotland including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee.
Every engineer we represent is interviewed by phone and on a Teams video call before an employer sees their CV, and each CV goes to the employer with a written summary of your background, why you are looking and your salary expectations. Our consultants are not paid commission.

Our Scottish Engineering Salary Guide 2026, based on live Scottish adverts for permanent roles, puts design engineers at £35,000 to £70,000 basic. The highest salaries go to engineers designing offshore and subsea equipment and to electrical design engineers in power and renewables. CAD skills matched to the employer, experience of design codes and chartered status all help move you up the range.
It depends on the sector you want to work in. SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor are common in manufacturing and fabrication, AutoCAD is widely used for 2D layouts and schematics, and PTC Creo appears at larger manufacturers and some offshore, subsea and defence businesses. Experienced engineers can move between 3D packages, but employers usually prefer a direct match, so check the adverts in your target sector.
A draughtsperson or CAD technician mainly produces models and drawings, often from someone else's design. A design engineer is responsible for the engineering decisions: choosing materials, sizing components, carrying out calculations and confirming the design is fit for purpose. Many design engineers begin in the drawing office and progress as they take on that responsibility, often while studying for an HNC, HND or degree.
Not always. Many design engineers come through a Modern Apprenticeship and the drawing office, adding an HNC or HND along the way. However, a lot of roles in offshore, defence and power ask for a degree, and a degree makes the route to Chartered Engineer status more direct. Experience and a strong portfolio of designs still count for a great deal with employers.
It matters most in precision, machined and assembled products, where plain plus and minus tolerances cannot describe how parts must fit and function. In the UK, BS 8888 sets out technical product documentation and references the ISO geometrical product specification standards, while some customers work to ASME Y14.5. Being able to explain the datums and tolerances on your own drawings is a common interview test.
